Frederick Jones from Knutton, a sportsman described as a "local legend in his own lifetime", died suddenly on 20 January, 2010.

The 64-year-old was well-known across Staffordshire as a former local leagues footballer.

Sister Geraldine Lawton said her brother was a gentleman and a very good sportsman who had played football, cricket and golf: "He tried to go into football, but we were a close family and he didn't want to leave his brothers and sisters."

Mr Jones started off playing for the youth team at Knutton Village Hall.

He played in local and county leagues, including the City Trader League, throughout his life, most notably appearing with the Diamond Clay football team.

Mr Jones was a midfielder who changed position to sweeper after breaking his leg.

Mrs Lawton said: "He was a loveable fellow and no-one had a bad word against him."

Your thoughts

I just wanted to let you know that 'Lasting Tribute' has been such a great comfort to the family and friends of the late Tony Parry — since the traumatic death of Tony in November 2009. It has been a great thrill in a sad time to see the tributes to Tony grow. I know too that his family have gained so much comfort from logging on and reading so many special memories and tributes. Your site is wonderful, and THANK YOU for being there — for so many people! Paul Gough
Just had to let you know the candles arrived at 7.30 am today, what efficient service. They are wonderful, very very pleased and had to admit I did shed a few tears at seeing my son Ian's candle. Thank you once again I will definitely recommend you and your service to others. Jill Palmer
In my view, Lasting Tribute is very worthwhile. In our frantic world, it's good to see a site which pauses to reflect the loss of various talented individuals and provides space for others to pay tribute to them. I think it's a lovely concept. Andy Brett
