Frederick Jones from Knutton, a sportsman described as a "local legend in his own lifetime", died suddenly on 20 January, 2010.
The 64-year-old was well-known across Staffordshire as a former local leagues footballer.
Sister Geraldine Lawton said her brother was a gentleman and a very good sportsman who had played football, cricket and golf: "He tried to go into football, but we were a close family and he didn't want to leave his brothers and sisters."
Mr Jones started off playing for the youth team at Knutton Village Hall.
He played in local and county leagues, including the City Trader League, throughout his life, most notably appearing with the Diamond Clay football team.
Mr Jones was a midfielder who changed position to sweeper after breaking his leg.
Mrs Lawton said: "He was a loveable fellow and no-one had a bad word against him."
"I'm only three years older than him, but I can remember when he was born and my mum and dad bringing him out of hospital as plain as anything."
